chemicals such as lye, vinegar and baking soda have been
used for many years to remove dirt and organic material
from surfaces, carpeting and clothing. It was not until
the invention of detergents in the 1940’s that more
efficient cleaning products began to emerge. The problem
with these products is that they only emulsify and
remove dirt and grease while they are wet. Once the
surface dries it begins to become dirty again.
Once microorganisms became known as the causative
agent for many diseases there began an on-going battle
to kill them. People were frightened into believing that
to be healthy they should live in a bacteria-free
environment. Thus began the era of ever-stronger
antibiotics and disinfectants; and soon after drug and
disinfectant resistant superbugs that threaten our way
of life. Even now we continue to overuse both
antibiotics and disinfectants despite mounting evidence
that they are contributing to rise of resistant strains
such as MRSA, VRE, and CRE.
We are very close to a situation where you or your
children could contact a serious, life-threatening
infection by merely scratching a finger while working in
the garden, or skinning a knee playing an active sport.

What is the
