Understanding Probiotic Cleaning

 The History of Cleaning

Basic chemicals such as lye, vinegar and baking soda have been used for many years to remove dirt and organic material from surfaces, carpeting and clothing. It was not until the invention of detergents in the 1940’s that more efficient cleaning products began to emerge. The problem with these products is that they only emulsify and remove dirt and grease while they are wet. Once the surface dries it begins to become dirty again.

Once microorganisms became known as the causative agent for many diseases there began an on-going battle to kill them. People were frightened into believing that to be healthy they should live in a bacteria-free environment. Thus began the era of ever-stronger antibiotics and disinfectants; and soon after drug and disinfectant resistant superbugs that threaten our way of life. Even now we continue to overuse both antibiotics and disinfectants despite mounting evidence that they are contributing to rise of resistant strains such as MRSA, VRE, and CRE.

We are very close to a situation where you or your children could contact a serious, life-threatening infection by merely scratching a finger while working in the garden, or skinning a knee playing an active sport. It has been predicted by the US Centre for Disease Control that without some unforeseen medical advance more people will die of common infections than cancer. To download and read the CDC report click here.

What is the solution?

What we need are cleaners that work continuously from application to application; not simply killing all bacteria, but focussing on controlling bad bacteria while allowing harmless and beneficial bacteria to thrive.

This goal is now much closer to reality with the introduction of probiotic (biological) cleaning products which offer both a better way to both clean away dirt plus control pathogenic or “bad” microorganisms (germs).

Probiotic cleaners have several advantages.

Probiotic cleaning products contain live, harmless (probiotic) bacteria and plant-based surfactants (soap).

The surfactants help break down surface dirt and emulsify oils and greases to wash them away.

The probiotic bacteria work at the microscopic level to break down biofilm that harmful bacteria grow to protect themselves as well as competitively exclude the bad bacteria.

They live for up to 7 days and work continuously to consume organic matter (dirt).

This process is not to be confused with enzyme cleaners which contain a chemical additive that has a biological origin but is not alive. Enzymes are like any chemical surfactant that only works until it dries.

Concerns about disinfectants and sanitizers

Disinfectants are commonly used because they advertise that they kill up to 99.9% of germs on surfaces. Usually the percentage is much lower and the effect is temporary. This is because:

  • The bad bacteria often have a protective biofilm house over themselves that blocks the effect of the disinfectant.

  • The disinfectant is not properly mixed or applied. To work properly disinfectants must be in liquid form on the surface for up to 10 minutes. This is rarely done.

  • The bad bacteria have already developed a resistance to the poison, so are not killed by it. This is not obvious to the user.

In any case, as soon as the disinfectant dries the bad bacteria begin to grow back and are more resistant to the poison than they were before.

Disinfectants are poisons therefore they are toxic to both the user and the environment.

Probiotic cleaning products break down biofilm, more effectively control bad bacteria from living on surfaces than disinfectants, and do not cause the development of resistance.

The result is better hygiene and a reduction in the risk of infection due to lower numbers of bad bacteria.  The bioClens products represent a new paradigm in the care of a wide range of facilities, hence our tagline; Using Nature to Redefine Clean.

What are the probiotic cleaning products that we offer?

BioNator Probiotic Odour Eliminator and Deep Cleaner

BioNator is a highly effective odour eliminator and deep cleaner, which quickly and easily cleans all types of surfaces and eliminates organic odours at the source.

BioNator combines “odour control technology” which rapidly binds and holds the bad odours with “biological activity” which then destroys the bound bad odour molecules – thus completely eliminating the odour.

BioNator also contains sophisticated, non-resoiling cleaning capabilities designed specifically for fabric carpet and upholstery stain and odour removal.

Q7 Biological Treatment

Q7 is a blend of beneficial bacteria designed to break down solid waste and eliminate odours.

One of the latest developments are added strains to degrade vegetable cooking oils such as canola and soy based products that have been a challenge for waste treatment in the past.

The uses for Q7 extend from dry septic systems (pit toilets and outhouses) to water remediation (sewage systems), and keeping grease traps, piping, and transfer stations operating properly.
